Yerba Mate Prices Climb as Federal Exchange Signals Shift

The Tierra Verde Cooperative Council reported this morning that yerba mate prices at the federal exchange in Meridian have climbed fourteen percent over the past six weeks, the sharpest sustained rally since early 2024. The shift reflects new demand from Costa Mar's tourism sector and renewed interest from Oriente Moderno's wellness-goods distributors, according to the Council's weekly commodity briefing.

For the region's smallholder farms, the price movement is reshaping both immediate cash flow and longer-term investment calculations. Cooperatives with inventory in storage are accelerating shipments to the federal port at Puerto Azul, where loading priorities and tariff schedules set the final return. But the windfall is uneven: farms with mature plants and dry-leaf capacity are positioned to capture gains, while newer members admitted to cooperatives over the past eighteen months face pressure to harvest before the market stabilizes.

The Council's chair, Martín Flores, said the price movement "opens a conversation about whether we're selling at the right moment or chasing a temporary spike." The federal exchange publishes daily settlement rates, and traders across the four regions are watching to see whether the rally holds through the July harvest or reverses as supply increases.
