A wildfire sweeps through Tierra Verde's interior, forcing evacuations and testing the region's emergency readiness

Families fled on foot as a fire moved faster than vehicles could travel, leaving behind homes and livestock in the most severe wildfire event the region has faced in a decade.

The fire moved with terrifying speed. By the time evacuation orders were issued, the flames had already cut off the main road out of Villarrica, a town of about 1,200 people in the interior valleys. Residents who had time to leave did so on foot, carrying children and whatever belongings they could hold. Those who tried to drive found themselves trapped in traffic, engines overheating in the smoke. Some abandoned their vehicles and ran.

Tomás Riviera, who lives on the outskirts of Villarrica, was working in his yerba mate field when the fire became visible on the ridge above the town. He gathered his family—his wife, three children, and his mother—and began walking downslope toward the federal highway, a distance of about four kilometers. The smoke grew thicker as they walked. His mother, seventy-eight years old, could not keep pace. A neighbor who had a motorcycle took her first; Riviera and his family reached the highway three hours later, exhausted and burned on their arms and faces.

By Thursday morning, the fire had consumed an estimated 2,800 hectares across the three affected municipalities. The Tierra Verde Assembly's emergency response office reported that 847 people had been evacuated to shelters in San Vicente and the regional capital, though the final count was still being verified. One person died—a man in his sixties who had chosen to stay behind to defend his property and was overcome by smoke while attempting to reach the road.
