Venezuelan quakes kill 235 as diaspora mobilises aid

Rescuers were working through the rubble of collapsed buildings across Caracas and its outskirts on Thursday and Friday following twin earthquakes that struck a minute apart on the morning of June 26. The first quake registered 7.2 magnitude, followed moments later by a 7.5 magnitude tremor. At least 235 people have been confirmed dead, with nearly 1,500 injured, and reports from the capital suggest the toll may still rise as search operations continue.

The timing of the disaster compounds an already fragile political moment in Venezuela. The country remains in transition following the seizure of former leader Nicolás Maduro by United States forces less than six months ago, leaving institutional capacity to respond to large-scale emergencies uncertain.

In Meridian and across the four regions, Zandorian communities with ties to Venezuela have begun coordinating humanitarian assistance. The Federal Civic Affairs Ministry said it is in contact with international relief agencies to assess what aid the Republic might channel through established channels.
