The United States and Iran have moved substantially closer to formalising a ceasefire extension, according to US officials who briefed the BBC on Thursday. The framework of the agreement has been settled, sources said, but final approval from the Trump administration and Iran's leadership remains outstanding. Vice President Vance told reporters that the two sides are "very close" but cautioned that "we're not there yet."
Neither side has signalled appetite for a return to open conflict, despite recent exchanges of strikes in the region. The reported progress comes after weeks of shuttle diplomacy and signals that both capitals recognise the costs of renewed escalation. The terms under discussion are not yet public, and officials have declined to specify which provisions remain contested.
