Reef stress signals mount across Costa Mar coast

Three monitoring stations along the Costa Mar coast reported unusual readings in the first week of July, marking the second consecutive month of elevated stress indicators across the peninsula's reef systems. The Punta Negra station, which measures temperature and nutrient load at the northern reef edge, recorded surface temperatures 1.2 degrees above the seasonal mean, while the Bahía Profunda and Cayo Hermano stations to the south reported phosphate concentrations at levels typically seen only during the dry season's agricultural runoff peak.

The readings arrive as the region enters its peak tourism season, when dive operators and snorkelling tours bring thousands of visitors to the reefs each week. The Costa Mar Marine Ministry convened an emergency coordination meeting on Tuesday to assess whether the anomalies signal a temporary fluctuation or a sustained shift that might require restrictions on commercial access to sensitive reef zones.

Federal Hydro Authority officials noted that reservoir levels remain adequate despite the warmer water temperatures, but acknowledged that the combination of heat and nutrient stress has prompted discussions about adjusting the timing and volume of freshwater releases from the Río Esperanto system into coastal zones. The question now facing regional administrators is whether intervention—and at what scale—can prevent the kind of widespread coral bleaching that affected portions of the reef in previous years.
