Reef monitors report recovery signals as shipping debate sharpens

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its June readings on Thursday, recording a 0.3-degree Celsius decline in mean water temperature across the northern monitoring stations and a 12 percent improvement in coral polyp density at the Punta Brava site. The data, collected over the past four weeks, marks the first sustained improvement in the northern reef cluster since March. Temperature and health metrics have stabilised as the rainy season deepens and cloud cover increases across the peninsula.

The results offer a cautious counterweight to months of tension between conservation officials and the Federal Hydro Authority over water-release schedules from the Esperanto River reservoirs. Warmer freshwater discharges in the dry season have historically stressed reef systems; the network's latest findings suggest that adjusted release protocols, implemented in May at the urging of the Marine Ministry, may be beginning to show effect.

Yet the improvement has done little to ease a separate and sharper conflict: the routing of container traffic through the Azul Strait, which bisects two of the peninsula's most biodiverse reef zones. A federal inquiry into a 2024 grounding incident near Punta Brava has widened into a review of Oriente Moderno's shipping corridor agreements, pitting the port authority's revenue interests against Costa Mar's conservation mandate.
