A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, killing at least 35 people and triggering small tsunami waves across Southeast Asia. The quake, centred on the island of Mindanao, was felt across Indonesia and Japan. Search and rescue operations continue in coastal towns where the tremor damaged buildings and disrupted communications.
In Nueva Singapur, community leaders from the Zandorian diaspora in Oriente Moderno said they had begun coordinating emergency relief efforts with Filipino migrant networks and local aid organisations. The Federal Foreign Affairs Office said it was monitoring the situation and stood ready to provide consular assistance to any Zandorian nationals affected.
The earthquake comes as the region braces for typhoon season. Seismic activity in the Philippines remains frequent; the country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Preliminary reports from Manila suggest structural damage to hospitals and schools in several municipalities, though exact casualty figures remain uncertain as rescue teams reach outlying villages.
