Nueva Singapur's tech hub faces a visa crossroads

At the office of Nexus Labs, a fintech startup founded four years ago in Nueva Singapur's Puerta district, founder Chen Wei was reviewing a rejection notice from the Federal Interior Ministry. The notice denied a work visa to Dmitri Sokolov, a software engineer Chen had offered a contract to. Sokolov had passed every technical screen and accepted the role at a salary of 67,000 florins annually. The Interior Ministry's letter said his qualifications did not meet the "strategic skills" threshold defined in the Federal Charter's immigration articles.

The rejection is one of dozens that Nueva Singapur's tech sector has absorbed in the past eighteen months. Startup founders and venture-capital firms report a pattern: visa denials for engineers, architects, and data scientists from outside the Republic, even when no domestic candidate exists for the role. The Federal Interior Ministry, led by Tomás Vidal, has maintained that the rules exist to protect the Republic's labor market and ensure that foreign workers do not displace citizens.

Chen's frustration is shared across Nueva Singapur's technology district, where at least 47 startups have reported visa rejections for skilled hires in 2026 alone. The issue has begun to reshape hiring strategy: some founders are now recruiting exclusively from the four regions, while others are considering relocating their development teams to jurisdictions outside the Republic entirely. One venture-capital firm, Tanjong Capital, has begun setting up a subsidiary in a neighboring jurisdiction specifically to house its engineering team.
