Container throughput hits record as monsoon window narrows

Fourteen container ships worked simultaneously at the deep-water berth, with average turnaround time compressed to 28 hours per vessel. The surge reflects a calculated gamble: shipping lines are frontloading cargo through the region's window of relatively stable weather before seasonal conditions force route diversions and extended transit times.

The acceleration has rippled through the port's logistics chain. Bunker deliveries to waiting vessels have tightened; the Oriente Moderno Financial Authority reported settlement volumes for fuel surcharges up 23 percent week-on-week. Warehouse operators report near-capacity utilization, and the Port Authority has activated emergency berth protocols normally reserved for typhoon recovery. A spokesperson said the terminal is performing within design specifications but acknowledged that sustained throughput at this level cannot continue beyond mid-August.

Shipping lines say the compression is unavoidable. Delays upstream in Costa Mar's marine-protection corridors and congestion at Tierra Verde's inland river terminals have created a cascading backlog. Nueva Singapur, as the Republic's only deep-water facility capable of handling ultra-large container vessels, absorbs the consequence. Carriers report booking premiums for guaranteed berth slots, with some lines quoting surcharges of 12 to 18 percent above standard rates for guaranteed Monday or Tuesday arrivals.
