Bunker shortage forces Nueva Singapur vessels to seek alternative routes

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur reported a 23 percent decline in bunker-fuel throughput over the past eight days, forcing shipping lines to divert vessels away from the region's primary refueling hub. The shortage, traced to supply-chain disruptions at the fuel terminal operated by Petromark Logistics, has left dozens of inbound container ships waiting in holding patterns or choosing to fuel at secondary ports in Costa Mar and Tierra Verde.

The operational impact is immediate. A typical transoceanic cargo run now adds between two and four days to transit schedules, and fuel surcharges imposed by routing operators have climbed to 8.2 percent above standard rates. Port Authority director Ramesh Vikram said the shortfall is "a temporary constraint on our throughput cycle, not a systemic failure," but acknowledged that vessel operators are already adjusting their weekly schedules to avoid the Nueva Singapur berth during peak demand windows.

The timing compounds existing pressures on the region's shipping sector. The monsoon window—the narrow operational corridor when larger container vessels can safely navigate regional waters—closes in six weeks. Any prolonged fuel shortage during this window threatens to push freight volume toward competing deep-water facilities in Costa Mar, undercutting Nueva Singapur's market share for the quarter.
