Tierra Verde farmers push back against Oriente Moderno's export bottleneck
Inland cooperatives say Nueva Singapur port tariffs and loading delays are eroding farm-gate prices across the region

In a warehouse outside San Vicente, fifty farmers sat in folding chairs on a Tuesday morning, listening to a lawyer from the Cooperative Council explain how the Republic's shipping system works—or, from their perspective, how it fails them. The lawyer, Diego Martínez, had been invited by the regional cooperatives to walk through a petition they are preparing to send to the Federal Assembly. The petition names the port authority in Nueva Singapur as the source of a slow-moving crisis that has been eroding farm-gate prices for two years.
The complaint is straightforward: coffee and yerba mate bound for export leave Tierra Verde by truck, cross the continent by rail and ship, and queue for loading at the deep-water container terminal in Oriente Moderno. The terminal's tariffs have risen twenty percent since 2024. More damaging, loading delays have stretched from weeks to months. When a shipment sits in port waiting for a berth, the buyer—usually an overseas roaster or processor—adjusts the price downward. The cooperatives absorb the loss.
The farmers in the warehouse represented roughly eight thousand smallholders across Tierra Verde's interior. They grow coffee, yerba mate, and smaller volumes of organic crops. Most belong to regional cooperatives that pool their harvests and negotiate federal exchange prices. But when those crops leave the region, they enter a federal system that the farmers say treats Tierra Verde as a supplier to be managed, not a partner to be served.
