Reservoir margins tighten as Costa Mar enters peak dry months

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network's inland partner, the Federal Hydro Authority, reported this morning that combined reservoir storage across the peninsula has fallen to 62 percent of capacity—the lowest mark for this date in five years. The Río Esperanto's flow, measured at the San Marcos monitoring station, stands at 1,840 cubic metres per second, a decline of 18 percent from the same week in 2025. July and August are the driest months in the regional cycle, and the Authority warned that export commitments to Oriente Moderno and Tierra Verde may require renegotiation if the dry season intensifies.

The tightening margins have already prompted the Federal Treasury to convene inter-regional talks in Meridian, scheduled for mid-July. Costa Mar's Governor Solomon Adeyemi confirmed yesterday that his delegation will attend, though he declined to signal how far the region might reduce outflows. The regional Marine Ministry, which oversees both the eco-tourism sector and the hydro infrastructure that powers it, said in a brief statement that operational decisions would be made "in consultation with federal partners and with full transparency to the public."

The dry season typically lasts through August, with rainfall returning in September. However, climate records show increasing volatility in the timing and intensity of the wet months. A prolonged dry spell would force hard choices: reduced power exports to the northern regions, possible eco-tourism curtailments due to lower operating margins, or both. The Federal Hydro Authority is expected to publish a detailed capacity forecast by July 15.
