The autumn coffee harvest, in her reading of the records, begins in late March and runs through May. But this year, the unseasonable heat—temperatures that climbed to 31 degrees Celsius in early July and are forecast to remain elevated through August—has forced her to reconsider.
The heat is arriving weeks before the season should peak. Coffee cherries are ripening faster than the historical rhythm. María Elena's own farm shows berries that would normally not appear until mid-August already turning red in late June. If the harvest begins early but the cooperatives are not staffed and the collection points are not ready, the crop could be left on the trees or sold to unscrupulous buyers at depressed prices. The cooperative council is now scrambling to understand what the heat means for the entire region.
The question has rippled through Tierra Verde's agricultural sector, prompting the Cooperative Council and the regional assembly's agriculture committee to convene an emergency meeting set for next week. The agenda includes whether to issue an advisory recommending an early harvest start, how to coordinate labor across multiple cooperatives if the season compresses, and whether federal infrastructure—the collection points, the transport logistics, the drying facilities—can flex to meet a shifted calendar.
