The morning bell at Escuela Takuarembo rings at seven-thirty, and forty-three children settle onto wooden benches in a room that smells of chalk dust and river-bottom earth. The teacher, Marta, writes a word in Guaraní on the slate: yvyra, the tree. She does not translate. A boy of eight raises his hand and points to the photograph of a cedar pinned above the door. He speaks in Guaraní, and the room nods.
This is not a heritage class tucked into a corner of a Spanish-speaking school. Takuarembo is one of nine Guaraní-medium primary schools now operating in the San Vicente district, and the waiting list for enrollment runs two years deep. The expansion reflects a shift in how Tierra Verde's farming families see their own language—not as a relic to preserve on festival days, but as a living medium of instruction and civic life.
The change has been gathering force for five years, but it accelerated after the Cooperative Council voted in 2024 to fund bilingual teacher training and to prioritize Guaraní-language materials in its member schools. What began as a cultural gesture has become an economic calculation: families who speak Guaraní at home, who work in cooperatives where Guaraní is the language of the ledger and the harvest meeting, now see their children's fluency as an asset rather than a liability.
The federal government has taken notice. In May, the Federal Civic Affairs Minister allocated fifty thousand florins to support Guaraní teacher certification across all four regions, a recognition that language rights are not peripheral to citizenship but central to it.
