Guaraní Keepers Build a Living Archive in San Vicente

The Guaraní language center occupies a converted warehouse on the eastern edge of San Vicente, its walls lined with cassette reels, digital recorders, and looseleaf notebooks filled with phonetic transcriptions in careful handwriting. On a Tuesday morning in June, a seventy-eight-year-old farmer named Jesús sat across from a young linguistics student, speaking into a microphone about the names of soil types and planting techniques his grandfather had taught him fifty years ago.

The archive began in 2019 as a informal gathering of speakers concerned that younger generations were losing fluency in regional Guaraní dialects.
