Guaraní radio finds new listeners as evening programs multiply

In the town of Puerto Iguazú, a small community radio station called Ñande Aru—meaning "our language"—has begun broadcasting every evening at six o'clock, just as farmworkers return from the fields and families gather for the meal hour. The programming mixes news read in Guaraní, folk music, and call-in segments where listeners discuss cooperative matters, weather, and local events in the language their grandparents spoke.

The station is one of five rural broadcasters in Tierra Verde that have extended their evening hours over the past four months, a quiet expansion driven by listener demand and the discovery that Guaraní-language radio reaches people who feel invisible in the federal media ecosystem. Most national broadcasts originate from Meridian or San Vicente and favor Esperanto; Spanish is common in urban centers. But in the countryside, Guaraní speakers—many of them smallholder farmers and their families—have found in these stations a mirror of their own world.

The movement reflects a broader cultural confidence in Tierra Verde, where Guaraní-language schools have expanded their evening classes and bilingual signage has become routine in cooperative offices and municipal buildings. But radio carries a different weight: it reaches people in the moment, in their homes, in their own tongue, without the formality of a classroom or the distance of print.
