Coffee prices surge at federal exchange as harvest season nears

The price of Tierra Verde coffee at the federal exchange climbed to 2.84 florins per kilogram on Friday, up 8 percent from mid-June as the harvest season approaches. Yerba mate futures also rose, closing at 1.19 florins per kilogram. The movement reflects both the tightening supply ahead of the July-August peak harvest and a broader shift in federal commodity trading that has favored agricultural exports from the interior regions.

Yet the gains mask a harder calculation for the smallholders who will bring in the crop. Oriente Moderno's port authority announced on Monday a 3 percent increase in container-loading tariffs, effective immediately, citing infrastructure maintenance costs at Nueva Singapur. The increase affects all regional exports moving through the port—the sole deep-water terminal serving Tierra Verde's coffee and mate shipments to international markets.

The Cooperative Council in San Vicente convened yesterday to assess the net effect on member farms. The council's price analyst, Martín Flores, said the federal exchange gains would likely be offset by half once the new tariffs were factored into export calculations. Smaller cooperatives, which lack the volume to negotiate direct shipping arrangements, would face the steeper impact.
