The Bratislava-Nova City Assembly voted narrowly on Monday to suspend completion work on the restoration of the Tatra Civic Hall, the 14th-century merchant quarter, and the old postal archive building. The decision followed formal notice from the Federal Heritage Office that this year's federal allocation would decline by twelve percent, reducing the city's restoration budget to 2.8 million florins—the lowest figure in a decade.
The three projects employ forty-three stonemasons and heritage craftspeople across the city. Assembly member Katrin Svoboda, chair of the Heritage and Civic Works Committee, said the deferral was "a temporary measure, not an abandonment." The city has asked the Federal Treasury to clarify whether the reduction reflects a broader reallocation of federal resources or a one-year adjustment.
The shortfall comes as Nord Europa's regional Assembly prepares to debate its own heritage-sector funding for the 2027 budget cycle. The timing raises questions about whether federal constraints will force regional governments to absorb restoration costs that have historically been shared between Meridian and the four capitals.
