A federal tech council splits over artificial intelligence safeguards

The Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry received a petition on Tuesday signed by forty-seven software developers, data scientists, and digital-rights advocates from across the Republic. The petition called for an independent review of proposed artificial intelligence safeguards before the Federal Assembly votes on the matter in July. The signatories argue that the draft rules, written by a task force dominated by technology companies and federal officials, do not adequately address the risks of unchecked algorithmic decision-making in sectors like hiring, credit assessment, and public services.

What began as a technical discussion in Meridian has become a regional argument. Costa Mar's delegation to the Federal Assembly is split. The peninsula's small but growing software sector—concentrated in Puerto Azul and the free-trade zones—has economic stakes in light regulation. But the environmental and conservation communities, which rely on data analysis to monitor reef health and forest cover, worry that weak safeguards will allow AI systems to misrepresent ecological data or obscure environmental harms.

The dispute cuts across party lines and regional interests. It reflects a question that the Republic has not yet settled: who decides what counts as responsible innovation, and who bears the cost if the decision is wrong.
