San Vicente Readies Its Oldest Harvest Festival After Lean Year

The Festival del Surco, marking its seventy-second edition, draws organisers and artisans together despite a cautious civic mood.

Every year in the last week of May, the city of San Vicente folds itself into the rhythms of the Festival del Surco ??? the Festival of the Furrow ??? a celebration of the agricultural cycle that has anchored Tierra Verde's civic calendar since 1954. This year's edition, the seventy-second, is being assembled against a backdrop of genuine economic tension: the yerba dispute with Meridian, a coffee yield roughly 11 percent below the five-year average, and a regional cooperative sector that is watching its margins with unusual vigilance. Yet the artisans, musicians, and community organisers who carry the festival's traditions forward have not paused.

The festival runs from 29 May through 1 June and draws visitors from across the republic, as well as a modest but loyal stream of guests from neighbouring countries who come specifically for the ceremonial opening of the Guaran??-language seed blessing, conducted each year by elders from the communities of the Arroyo Hondo canton. Attendance in recent editions has settled around 45,000 over the four days, making it one of the five largest cultural gatherings in Zandoria by participation.

This year's artistic director, Valent??n Moreau, a ceramicist and former schoolteacher from the canton of Piedra Blanca, has structured the programme around the theme of 'Ra??z y Resiliencia' ??? Root and Resilience ??? a choice that feels less like a slogan and more like a quiet acknowledgement of the season the region is living through. How the festival's organisers have managed to hold the programme together on a budget that was trimmed by the municipal council in March is a story worth telling in full.
