Six Centuries of Guild Records to Enter the Digital Commons

The Nord Europa Regional Archive announced on 21 May that it had secured funding to digitise its entire pre-modern collection ??? approximately 40,000 documents spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries ??? and to make the resulting archive freely accessible through the Federal Digital Commons in Meridian. The project, budgeted at ???2.4 million over three years, is the largest single investment in the Archive's 80-year institutional history.

The collection includes guild ledgers, municipal court records, land surveys, and correspondence between the civic councils of what are now Bratislava-Nova's old-town districts. The oldest item in scope is a trade agreement between two craft guilds dated 1382, written in a proto-Slovak dialect that requires specialist palaeographic training to read. Until now, access to the original documents has been limited to credentialed researchers who apply in advance and work on-site under supervision. The digitisation project will not change the terms for the physical originals, but the digital surrogates will carry no access restrictions.

The funding comes from three sources: the Nord Europa Regional Assembly (???1.1 million), the Federal Ministry of Culture (???900,000), and a private endowment from the Bratislava-Nova Civic Foundation, which contributed the remaining ???400,000. The Archive's director, Dr. Ondrej Fi??er-Varga, told the Herald that negotiations with the federal ministry took longer than anticipated, and that the final agreement included a condition that has not been widely reported.
